Description:
A Victorian design in black ink on pale wood — Jane Eyre in period lettering, an engraved portrait of Charlotte Brontë in a dotted medallion, and "Price, One Penny." printed at the foot. A handmade coaster modeled after a little hardback, spine and all.
When Jane Eyre appeared in 1847, it cost thirty-one shillings and sixpence — more than two weeks' wages for a governess like Jane, whose Thornfield salary was thirty pounds a year. By the century's end, cheap editions like the one this cover remembers sold for a single penny — cheap enough for a real governess to buy her own copy.
Why you'll love it:
- A penny-edition style cover — period lettering, Charlotte's portrait, and "Price, One Penny." at the foot
- Handmade from reclaimed wood and shaped like a miniature hardback, printed spine and all
- Fully sealed with a semigloss high-performance top coat — condensation and spills wipe clean
- Felt feet on the back keep your table free of scratches
Perfect for: Brontë readers, rainy-afternoon tea, or anyone who likes a little Gothic on the coffee table.
