Description:
Soft cornflower blue and white — Thomson's peacock perched on a sundial, tail fanned across the whole cover, with the title and "Illustrated by Hugh Thomson" set right into the feathers. A handmade coaster modeled after a little hardback, spine and all.
Austen's devoted readers have had a name for themselves since 1894 — "Janeite" — and it was coined inside this very edition. George Saintsbury introduced the word (he spelled it "Janite") in his preface to the Peacock Edition, the printing this cover comes from. The design and the fandom's name arrived together, in the same volume.
Why you'll love it:
- The 1894 peacock cover in soft blue and white — tail spread edge to edge, title nested in the feathers
- Handmade from reclaimed wood and shaped like a miniature hardback, printed spine and all
- Fully sealed with a semigloss high-performance top coat — condensation and spills wipe clean
- Felt feet on the back keep your table free of scratches
Perfect for: Janeites new and lifelong, Austen shelves, or anyone who gives first impressions a second chance.
