Northanger Abbey Book Coaster

Description:

Golden poppies climb an olive-green panel, a small bird perched among the stems, all set on a deep black ground — an Art Nouveau design in the style of the decorated bindings of the 1890s. A handmade coaster modeled after a little hardback, spine and all.

Northanger Abbey was the first novel Austen ever sold — and the last to reach print. A publisher bought the manuscript in 1803 for ten pounds, advertised it, then simply never printed it. Thirteen years later her brother bought it back for the same ten pounds — and only once the papers were signed did he mention that the novel the man had shelved was by the author of Pride and Prejudice. It finally appeared in 1817.

Why you'll love it:

• An Art Nouveau cover — golden poppies and a perched songbird on deep black — in full color
• Handmade from reclaimed wood and shaped like a miniature hardback, printed spine and all
• Fully sealed with a semigloss high-performance top coat — condensation and spills wipe clean
• Felt feet on the back keep your table free of scratches

Perfect for: readers who know Austen's funniest book when they see it, Gothic-novel fans in on the joke, or a bedside table with a sense of humor.
