Description:

A cream ceramic mug for Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, with a sage green handle and a sage green glaze inside. The front carries the title in red and green lettering, with a pair of gold bells tied in red ribbon beside it. Around the rim and the base runs a wreath of holly and red berries wound with red ribbon and small gold chains. Look closely and the chains are no accident: the ghost of Scrooge's old business partner arrives in the story dragging the chain he made for himself "link by link, and yard by yard". On the back, framed by the same holly, is the promise Scrooge makes near the end: "I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year."

The story ends over a drink. On the morning after Christmas, Scrooge, a changed man, tells his clerk Bob Cratchit that he is raising his pay and will talk it all through that afternoon "over a Christmas bowl of smoking bishop". Smoking bishop was a hot punch of the day, red wine and port warmed with roasted oranges, cloves, and sugar, served steaming from a bowl. A mug of anything hot is the right place for that line.

Why you'll love it:

  • Holly, berries, red ribbon, gold bells, and Marley's chains, drawn in the style of an old illustrated edition
  • Scrooge's promise on the back, in red and green lettering
  • A full 14 oz, with a wide, sturdy handle
  • Sage green inside, so the glaze shows above whatever you pour

Perfect for: Cocoa, tea, or coffee in December, and a shelf the rest of the year. For anyone who reads the book every Christmas, or watches a version of it, or simply likes a mug with holly on it.
