Of the three monsters on this stack, two are the real thing. Dracula really is a vampire; Frankenstein's creature really does live. The Headless Horseman is another matter. In Irving's story, Ichabod Crane, a gangly schoolteacher, and Brom Bones, the local strongman, are both courting the same farmer's daughter. Riding home from her house one night, Ichabod is chased through the woods by the Horseman, who flings his own head at him. Ichabod is never seen again. In the morning the searchers find his hat by the bridge and, next to it, a smashed pumpkin. Irving never says so outright, but he does mention that Brom married the girl and could never hear the pumpkin mentioned without laughing — and most readers come away with the same idea: the head was a pumpkin, and the rider was Brom.
