Thomson's peacock design has appeared on editions of Pride and Prejudice for over 130 years. But the novel was rejected before it was ever read. Austen's father sent the manuscript to a London publisher in 1797 under its original title, First Impressions. It was returned unopened. Sixteen years later, Austen revised it, renamed it, and published it herself. The book that the publisher wouldn't even read became the most enduring love story in English literature.
